The Boundary Commission for England published their initial proposals for changes to Parliamentary Constituency boundaries on the 13th Sept 11 Against a requirement to reduce the total number of Constituencies in England from 533 to 502, the Commission have allocated 68 Constituencies to London, a reduction of 5 from the current arrangements.
So far as the Royal Borough is concerned the initial proposals involve a significant change. Whilst the existing Constituency of Kingston and Surbiton is retained in a revised form, the Beverley, St. James and Old Malden Wards, along with Coombe Vale and Coombe Hill Wards from Richmond Park, are combined with 7 Wards from the neighbouring Constituency of Merton to form a new Constituency of Wimbledon and New Malden (with an electorate of 77,494). The remained Wards in the Borough are combined to form a revised Constituency of Kingston and Surbiton, which includes Tudor and Canbury Wards which are currently in Richmond Park. Thus the Richmond Park Constituency effectively disappears. Maps illustrating the changes are attached.
Full details of the proposals are set out in documents provided by the Boundary Commission see:- http://consultation.boundarycommissionforengland.independent.gov.uk/whats-proposed/london/
The consultation period runs until 5 December 2011 and, in the event of there being changes to initial proposals, there would be a further consultation period (8 weeks) on those changes. The deadline for the Commission to make their final recommendations to the Government is 1 October 2013 and the new boundaries would take effect from the next Parliamentary Election after that date.
